Instructions for Use of Plasti-Mend Clear

Plasti-Mend Clear is for the repair of clear acrylic plastic items such as refrigerator trays, light lenses etc. It can be used on any acrylic plastic and on other solvent reactive plastics such as ABS or PVC as a high gloss finish on repairs and worn or weathered plastic. It can be used as an adhesive for acrylic plastics to build pieces or parts.

Read all instructions and MSDS before beginning. Just like many products in everyday use, Plasti-Mend Clear contains chemicals that can be harmful or even fatal if not used properly. It is user responsibility to take the necessary precautions for safe use.

Caution

Check the Material Data Safety Sheet for complete safety instructions. Plasti-Mend Clear requires special precautions for use. Use only in well ventilated area and with proper Personal Protection Equipment.  A carbon filter vapor mask for organic solvents should be used even in a well ventilated area. A vapor mask cannot be relied on for protection from higher concentrations of Methylene Chloride that will develop in areas not well ventilated.  It is the responsibility of the user to determine the proper precautions for their specific application based upon current industry standards.

Flammable — Keep away from all sources of ignition. Vapors may travel to remote ignition source and flash back.

                                                    Preparation

The article for repair must be clean and dry. Any adhesives etc. from previous repairs must be removed. Use a wet or damp rag with alcohol to clean any loose dirt or other residues for about 6-8 inches around the repair area. Wipe it dry and use the cleaner/primer to clean and prep the repair area.  Do not allow the cleaner/primer onto any area not covered by the actual repair. There should be no moisture on the patch area.  Plasti-Mend Clear works best between 50°- 70°f. but can be used outside that temperature range. Do not allow direct sunlight to heat the repair area. It will increase evaporation of solvents causing bubbles in the repair. High humidity and/or heavy applications may cause a white “blush” to form on the repaired area.

The Plasti-Mend Clear 4 oz. should patch at least 24 inches of cracks depending upon the situation.

Plasti-Mend Clear cannot be left open for extended periods. The solvents that are necessary for proper performance evaporate quickly. The lid must be tightly replaced as soon as possible after use.  For proper performance, if the plastic resin becomes thick do not attempt to use.  This is a sign that too much of the solvents have evaporated. It can be thinned with the Plasti-Mend Thinner. A small amount of the cleaner can be used but it does not contain all of the proper solvents for thinning. Shortly after opening, the can and contents may begin to get cold and cause condensation. This is due to the rapid evaporative process.

Plasti-Mend Clear, the thinner and the cleaner will damage many plastics and finishes upon contact.

For Refrigerator trays, light lenses and any other acrylic plastic items, brush a layer of the plastic resin inside the crack area. A syringe or small squeeze bottle can be used for better control.  The P-M Clear will need to be applied in several light coats. Heavy coats and/or high humidity will cause the resin to dry with a white “blush”.

Try to get the resin into the crack to bond the crack back together. The P-M Clear will melt the plastic allowing it to bond, it is not a stand alone adhesive. Allow to harden for 1-2 hours or longer and apply several coats on the outside of the crack to strengthen the area. A small strip of thin white fiberglass mesh can be used to strengthen the repair. Allow resin to dry well between coats.
